I’m extremely excited to announce that my new book – The Grace Factor How to look & feel your best in the new Midlife! Makeup techniques for the woman over 50 – has hit the shelves! It has been my dream for a number of years to be able to share my expertise with as many women as possible through a book, and now my dream is coming true.

My passion for helping women in midlife derives from my own experiences, trials and challenges, both good and bad, as I entered my mid-life. There is no escaping it – as we age, our physiology changes. For instance, the tone of our skin is likely to change, our hair grays, and we develop wrinkles and lines where there were none before. This is all part of the beauty of aging, but often women ignore this in terms of their makeup routines. They do not equate one with having to change, or adjust, the other. Aging gracefully is about embracing and embellishing, not hiding, and I love to help women do this with the help of makeup. It’s also about helping women express their beauty from the inside out – this is my philosophy, and serves as the introduction to my book.

With an introduction by renowned Jane Iredale, I seek to help women over 50 “face the mirror and life’s challenges with the confidence of their younger selves.” My comprehensive, 100-page grace Makeup application book explores my unique colour philosophy: makeup always starts from colour analysis. Of course, colour analysis goes far beyond makeup into hair colour, accessories and clothing (check back in a few weeks for more blog posts on this subject!), but it is absolutely essential when talking about makeup. In fact, I’ve dedicated an entire chapter to it! When you know your colouring, it is far easier to choose the perfect shades and undertones to highlight your best features. Colour philosophy makes choice easy, and takes makeup beyond the superficial.

Not only do I touch upon philosophy in my book, but I also cover very practical techniques and insights that you can start using right away, such as my chapter on the anatomy of lips as well as going into depth on concealer and foundation. The purpose of this book is to really cover all aspects of makeup as it relates to the woman in mid-life. My hope is that it helps to instill confidence, joy and intrigue in my readers. I wrote this book for you, all the women that inspire me, and I cannot wait to share the final product with you!

The Sun – One of Your Skin’s Worst Enemies

There’s often nothing better than relaxing with a book on the beach all day, sipping a mojito and listening to the waves crash against the shore. What a wonderful picture of serenity. This relaxation is absolutely necessary for mind, body, and spirit, but when the sun is involved, we need to be careful.

Of course, we all need a healthy dose of vitamin D; that becomes apparent during the winter months when many people begin to suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder. When living in a place with distinct summer and winter months, we are usually ready and eager to get some sunshine once the temperature reaches 20°C. What we often forget about, in our sheer joy and excitement, is to apply sunscreen.

Sun Damage: An Inconvenient Truth

There are almost no limits to the damage that the sun can cause the skin; sun spots, wrinkles, burns, and in the most severe cases, melanoma. Needless to say, it is important to protect your skin from an earl age, but the importance of this during midlife increases. As we age, our skin becomes more fragile. We loose elasticity, pigment and gain wrinkles, and so it is imperative that we give our biggest organ, our skin, the best chance at preservation as possible.

Skin damage does happen over time (which is why it’s important to start young) but it is never too early to start applying sunscreen every day (yes, every day!), even if you aren’t planning on heading to the beach for that mojito. During the summer months, especially, the sun’s UV rays are strong, and so even a stroll in the park can cause some damage.

Sunscreen: The Skin’s Mighty Protector

So, how can you avoid all the complications that come along with too much sun? As stated, applying sunscreen every day should become an important part of your makeup routine. I’m not necessary talking about applying an oil SPF 50 to your face every morning, but applying in subtler ways, such as:

  1. Using a day cream with a built-in SPF
    Many day creams these days that are marketed to women in midlife have an SPF component built in already – look for those!
  2. Use a foundation with a built-in SPF
    Many “foundations” such as most BB creams have an SPF component

The sun should not be underestimated: powerful in it’s ability to make us smile, feel warm, and feed us, and equally powerful in it’s ability to, over time, cause damage to our biggest organ. If you love a tanned look, try to opt for less damaging methods, such as self-tanner (not the tanning bed!). As I mentioned, it is never too late to start protecting your skin from the sun!

How Colouring Changes With Age

It was long thought that a person’s colouring remained the same their entire lives. Once a Spring, always a Spring. That myth has been debunked. We now know that a person’s colouring does in fact change with time, beginning in midlife.

How and why does our colouring change?

There are a number of reasons why our colouring begins to change in our midlife. Firstly, and most crucial, our skin tone begins to change. Not only do we develop sun spots and wrinkles, but the colour of our undertone changes as well. Depending on the person, the undertone can either become cooler, or warmer, although it is typical for the skin to become cooler. This is the most telling sign of a persons changing colouration.

Other ways that our colouring changes in midlife is our eyes – they often loose their intensity and colour. We’re not talking about a green eye going grey, but rather a green eye dulling in hue. Also, our hair naturally greys, exhibiting another loss of colour. Yes, grey hair can be died, but there’s not much to be done about a changing undertone of the skin!

queenQueen Elizabeth is the perfect example of someone’s colours changing over time. When she was young, the Queen has rich auburn hair and bright blue eyes; she was Warm, Clear and Bright (or a Clear Spring). Over time and especially approaching her midlife, her hair began to grey, her eyes paled, and she lost her once high contrast between her skin and hair colour. Her skin has also “greyed” significantly and she’s lost some warmth in her skin. Due to this changing colouration, she no longer looks excellent in the bright colours she used to wear when she was young, but rather has switched to a more “Cool and Muted” wardrobe.

What does this mean for you?

Your changing colouration shouldn’t concern you or make you self-conscious. It is something that happens naturally over time, and can be boosted by wearing the right makeup. Many women fail to ignore this changing colouration, however, and continue to use the same makeup in the same colours that they have their whole life. Just like wearing the wrong colours clothing-wise, wearing the wrong colours make-up wise can make you look off, tired, and not your graceful self.

The Link Between Your Colouring and Your Personality

“Deborah, what do you mean the link between my colouring and my personality?” That’s a great question. Seems a little strange, doesn’t it? I mean, what do the colour of your eyes have to do with your personality? In this post I will explore the relationship between colour and personality, what it means and why it’s important.

Johannes Itten was the first, in 1928, notice a link between appearance (including a person’s colouring) and their personality. In his case, the students’ appearance affected the colours they chose to paint with – today, in this discussion, we’re concerned with what colours individuals chose to wear. Itten observed that when children painting with the colours they chose – likely the ones that “suited” their personality”- they created better artwork. What I am arguing is that the colours that a person choses to wear (including their makeup application) will either positively or negatively affect their presence, much like how the student’s artwork was affected.

Colour Personality – A Brief History

Over 2,400 years ago Hippocrates studied human behaviour and produced a theory that characterized people as being one of four temperaments. They are:

  1. Phlegmatic (slow moving) – corresponds with Cool and Muted
  2. Melancholic (a worrier) – corresponds with Cool and Clear
  3. Sanguine (Animated) – corresponds with Warm and Clear
  4. Choleric (Assertive) – corresponds with Warm and Muted

As has been discovered, the four basic colour seasons fit well with this theory. Typically, a person is a blend of these traits, usually exhibiting a dominant trait with one or two subordinate traits.

In the early 1980’s, Angela Wright, a colour psychologist, discovered links between patterns of colour and patterns of human behaviour. She saw the same links between the four personality types with the four colour families that Johannes Itten had seen; this explained why different people had different responses when observing the same colour.

What Does This Mean For Me?

How does knowing your colouring, and colour personality, help you in your quest to dress and look your best? Firstly, knowing your colouring is the first step to wearing the right kinds and shades of makeup that will enhance as opposed to detract. Secondly, when you wear colours that don’t suit you – that aren’t in harmony with your colouring and your energy – you may feel not quite like yourself. Perhaps you feel, and look, a little sickly or tired. Your skin looks drained, blotchy. You’re standing a little shorter. Knowing your colours, and your colour personality, will help you put your best face forward, every day.

0010As this is my first blog post for grace Makeup, I’d first like to start by introducing myself, and then explain why I do what I do.

My name is Deborah Williams. grace Makeup for Midlife was founded in 2006, after many years working with television and movie actors. I trained in the wig and makeup program at the Canadian Opera Company, where I gained invaluable skills that have since expanded and developed to other areas of makeup artistry. My clients include the likes of Kelly McGillis, Helena Bonham, Margot Kidder, Leonard Cohen, Graham Greene, and Omar Sharif. I am a consultant at Corporate Class Inc., a firm providing training in Executive Presence. Most of all, I love bringing out the best in women with my talents. I work out of my home studio, with my trusty “studio cats” by my side, Tilly and Rupert, who are both Rex cats.

I continue to work in the television industry including CBC, Global & other stations.

So why grace Makeup for Midlife? Well, it’s rather simple. Grace is meant to represent gracious, an attribute I believe we develop as we age. Over the course of adulthood, the tone of our skin is likely to change, as is the texture of our hair, and we develop wrinkles where there weren’t any before! We may not be happy about it, but aging is a reality.  And although we might think that we are gaining only wrinkles and grey hair, because that’s what we see in the mirror, aging gives us more than than.   We simply have to uncover the elegance and style, the beauty and the grace it gives us.  I founded grace Makeup because I want to help you learn to bring out the “best you” at whatever stage you are in in your midlife.

Despite the inevitable physical changes, many women continue to apply makeup as they have their whole lives (or avoid makeup altogether). This is a problem! Our skin and colouring change, so doesn’t it seem natural that the way we put on makeup should change as well? If you find it difficult to know what changes to make let grace Makeup help you.

More often than not, women find that they feel better when they wear even the smallest amount of makeup – it’s uplifting, and that certainly shines through. In addition, a Harvard study has shown that women who wear makeup (even a very small amount) are more confident, and are viewed by others as more competent, intelligent, likeable and trustworthy. That is “why makeup”.

At grace, we know that when you look your best, you feel confident. When you’re confident, you glow and command presence wherever you go.
